SEO in Malaysia is usually sold as a monthly retainer. Pricing published by Malaysian agencies in 2026 puts most SME retainers between about RM1,500 and RM5,000 a month, with starter packages from around RM1,000 and enterprise or large e-commerce work at RM6,000 to RM15,000 or more. Where you land depends on how competitive your market is and how much work your website needs.

How is SEO priced in Malaysia?

There are four common pricing models. The ranges below come from agencies’ own published pricing pages and guides, which are marketing material rather than an independent survey. Treat them as indicative.

Model How it is billed Published range Suits
Monthly retainer A fixed fee each month, often with a 6 to 12 month minimum RM1,000 – RM15,000+ a month Ongoing growth in rankings and leads
One-off SEO audit A single fee for a written review of your site RM2,500 – RM10,000, by site size Teams that will fix issues in-house
Project fee A fixed fee for a defined job, such as speed work or a migration Quoted per project. Speed work alone is published at RM3,000 – RM11,000 One-time technical problems
Local SEO package Monthly, or one-off for a listing clean-up RM1,500 – RM3,500 a month, or RM1,300 – RM6,600+ one-off Single-location businesses

Some consultants also bill by the hour. Published hourly rates run from about RM150 to RM540.

How much does SEO cost per month?

Business Indicative monthly range What it usually includes
Small local business RM1,000 – RM2,500 Basic on-page fixes, limited content, monthly reporting
Growing SME with real competition RM2,500 – RM6,000 Full technical audit, regular content, link building
Enterprise, multi-location or large store RM6,000 – RM15,000+ Multi-location work, extensive content, a dedicated strategist

These tiers follow MYSense’s published table. Other agencies draw the lines differently. Magnes Marketing puts a standard SME retainer at RM2,500 to RM7,000 and e-commerce SEO at RM5,000 to RM20,000, while ZenWeb says most SMEs pay RM1,500 to RM3,000. A LOCUS-T comparison of published agency packages found monthly prices from RM1,700 to RM4,980.

What drives the price of SEO?

  1. Competition. Ranking for “lawyer Kuala Lumpur” takes far more work than “bakery in Ipoh”. Competitive terms need more content and more authority.
  2. Site size and condition. A ten-page company site and a store with thousands of products are different jobs. Broken links, slow pages and crawl errors all add work before growth can start.
  3. Content volume. How many articles and pages are written each month is one of the biggest differences between tiers.
  4. Link building. Earning links through PR, partnerships and useful content takes time. Buying links to manipulate rankings breaks Google’s spam policies.
  5. Locations and languages. Each extra branch, market or language, such as Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese versions of your pages, multiplies the work.
  6. AI search. Some agencies now price optimisation for AI answers as an extra. Our guide to showing up in AI Overviews and ChatGPT search explains what that work involves.

What are the red flags in an SEO quote?

  • Guaranteed rankings. Google states that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, and advises finding someone else if an SEO promises first place.
  • Cheap backlink packages. Offers like “1,000 backlinks for RM100” use automated or paid links, which Google treats as link spam.
  • Very low retainers. Agencies including ZenWeb and Magnes Marketing warn that packages under about RM800 a month usually mean AI-written content or automated links, with no real technical work.
  • No reporting. You should get regular reports and read access to your own Google Search Console.
  • Secrecy. Google warns against SEOs who will not explain what they plan to change on your site.

How long does SEO take to show results?

Google says some changes take effect in a few hours and others take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging any single change. Rankings for competitive terms build up over time, which is why 6 to 12 month minimum terms are common. Plan in months, not weeks. If you need leads this month, compare SEO and Google Ads before you commit.

How do I compare SEO quotes?

Two quotes at the same price can include very different work, so compare scope first. Ask every agency these questions:

Question A good answer
What happens each month? A list of deliverables: fixes, pages, articles and links
Which keywords will you target? Terms tied to what you sell, not just search volume
How do you build links? Outreach, PR and content, never bought or automated links
How will you report progress? Monthly reports on traffic, enquiries and rankings
What results do you expect, and when? A realistic estimate with no ranking guarantee
Will you explain every change to my site? Yes, with the reasoning behind it
Do you follow Google Search Essentials? Yes
Who owns the content and accounts? You do, including your Google Business Profile
What is the minimum term and notice period? Stated clearly in the contract

If a quote moves your site to a new platform, check it covers redirects. Our website migration SEO checklist lists what that should include.

Frequently asked questions

How much does SEO cost per month in Malaysia?

Published agency pricing puts most SME retainers at about RM1,500 to RM5,000 a month. Starter packages begin around RM1,000, and enterprise work runs from RM6,000 to RM15,000 or more.

Is local SEO cheaper than full SEO?

Usually. Published local SEO packages for single-location businesses run about RM1,500 to RM3,500 a month, below most full retainers.

Can an SEO agency guarantee first place on Google?

No. Google says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking and advises avoiding SEOs who claim they can.

Should I pay monthly or for a one-off project?

Pay monthly if you want ongoing content and link building. A one-off audit or project suits a specific problem, such as technical errors or a migration, when someone in-house can carry out the fixes.

Is cheap SEO worth it?

Be cautious. Malaysian agencies warn that packages under about RM800 a month usually rely on AI-written content or low-quality links, which can harm your rankings.
