Website maintenance is the routine work that keeps a site secure, online and accurate after launch: software updates, backups, monitoring, renewals and regular checks. In Malaysia, the published monthly plans we checked cost from RM199 to RM1,499, depending on site size, the hours included and whether hosting is bundled. Some tasks run daily and others once a year. Skipping them is how sites get hacked, show security warnings or go offline.

What does website maintenance include?

  • Software updates. The CMS core, plugins and themes, such as WordPress and WooCommerce.
  • Security patches and scans. Apply security fixes quickly and scan for malware.
  • Backups and restore tests. Keep copies off the server, and restore one now and then to prove the backup works.
  • Uptime monitoring. A service checks the site every few minutes and alerts someone when it goes down.
  • SSL renewal. The certificate behind the padlock and https.
  • Domain renewal. Keep the domain paid, in your company’s name, with a contact email someone reads.
  • Speed checks. Pages slow down as images, plugins and scripts pile up.
  • Broken links. Find links to pages that no longer exist and fix them.
  • Content updates. Prices, products, opening hours, staff and policies.
  • Form and checkout tests. Submit every form and place a test order.
  • Analytics checks. Confirm tracking still records visits and conversions.

How often should each task happen?

Task How often Notes
Uptime monitoring Continuous Alerts by email or messaging app
Backups Daily for online stores, weekly for brochure sites Keep at least one copy off the server
Restore test Every three months Restore to a staging copy, not the live site
Core, plugin and theme updates Weekly Apply security fixes as soon as they are released
Malware scan Weekly And after any unexplained change
Form and checkout test Monthly, and after every update Include payment and email notifications
Speed and broken link check Monthly Test your main landing pages on mobile
Analytics check Monthly Compare with last month for sudden drops
Content review Every three months Prices, policies and contact details first
SSL certificate Check monthly Confirm auto-renewal works
Domain renewal Yearly Turn on auto-renew

What happens when maintenance is skipped?

Hacked WordPress sites

Patchstack counted 11,334 new vulnerabilities in the WordPress ecosystem in 2025, 42% more than in 2024, and 91% of them were in plugins. For heavily targeted flaws, the median time to the first exploit was 5 hours, so a site updated once a month stays exposed for weeks. And 46% of vulnerabilities had no fix from the developer when they were made public, so remove plugins you do not use.

For online stores, a breach also brings reporting duties under the PDPA. Our E-Commerce Bill guide covers them.

Expired SSL certificates

When a certificate expires, browsers warn visitors that the site is not secure. Certificates are also getting shorter. The maximum lifetime fell from 398 days to 200 days on 15 March 2026. It falls to 100 days on 15 March 2027 and 47 days on 15 March 2029. Manual renewals will not keep up, so check that auto-renewal works.

Expired domains

For a .my domain, MYNIC allows up to 45 days after expiry to renew, depending on the registrar, and the site may be suspended in that time. A 30-day redemption period follows, when the website and email stop working and renewal costs an extra fee. After 5 days of pending delete, anyone can register the domain.

Broken forms and checkout

A plugin update, a payment gateway change or an expired API key can stop forms or checkout while the homepage still looks fine. Without regular tests, you find out when enquiries or sales stop.

Retainer, hourly or bundled with hosting?

  • Monthly retainer. A fixed fee covers routine tasks and a set number of hours. It suits sites that change often, such as online stores. Ask whether unused hours roll over.
  • Hourly or ad hoc. You pay when something breaks or needs changing. ZenWeb’s 2026 guide puts pay-per-fix work at RM120 to RM250 an hour. It suits small sites that rarely change, but nobody watches the site between jobs.
  • Bundled with hosting. One provider runs the server, the domain and the website. Alongside our web hosting, we offer maintenance packages covering security updates, backups and technical support, with your domain, hosting and website managed by the same team.

What should you ask a maintenance provider?

  1. Which tasks are included, and how often does each one run?
  2. Are updates tested on a staging copy before they go live?
  3. Where are backups stored, how long are they kept, and when was the last restore test?
  4. How fast do you respond when the site is down?
  5. Is the domain registered in my company’s name, and who holds the logins?
  6. How many hours of content work are included, and do unused hours roll over?
  7. Are prices quoted before or after SST?
  8. If I leave, do I keep my backups and access?

DIY or outsourced maintenance?

DIY Outsourced
Cost Your time, plus tools for backups and monitoring A monthly or hourly fee
Skills needed Updates, backups and fixing plugin conflicts None on your side
When the site goes down You find out when you notice Monitoring alerts the provider
When an update breaks something You fix it or restore a backup The provider rolls it back
Best for Simple sites with few plugins Online stores and sites that bring in leads

Hosted platforms such as Shopify run the servers and core software for you, which shortens the list. Our Shopify vs WooCommerce vs OpenCart comparison covers that trade-off. If updates keep breaking an old site, a rebuild may cost less than patching it. Start with our website redesign checklist.

Frequently asked questions

How much does website maintenance cost per month in Malaysia?

The published plans we checked range from RM199 to RM1,499 a month. Small sites sit at the low end, and full webmaster outsourcing at the top.

How often should a website be updated?

Check for core, plugin and theme updates every week, and apply security fixes as soon as they are released. Review content every three months.

Is website maintenance included in web hosting?

Not always. Hosting keeps the server running, and maintenance looks after the website on it. Some providers bundle both, so ask which tasks are included.

Does a Shopify store need maintenance?

Yes, but less of it. Shopify runs the servers and core software. You still look after apps, theme changes, content, the domain and checkout tests.

What happens if my .my domain expires?

You get up to 45 days to renew, depending on your registrar. Then a 30-day redemption period starts, when the website and email stop working and renewal costs extra. After that, the domain is deleted and anyone can register it.
