Google Ads Cost in Malaysia: 2027 Budget and Fee Guide
What Google Ads costs in Malaysia: 8% SST, CPC by industry from Keyword Planner and our client accounts, how to set a starting budget, and agency fees.
Google Ads in Malaysia has no minimum spend. You set a daily budget, pay for each click, and Google adds 8% service tax for accounts with a Malaysian business address. What a click costs depends on your keywords and industry. In a sample of 80 Malaysian buyer keywords we pulled from Google’s Keyword Planner in October 2026, the median click cost RM4.82, and industry medians ran from RM1.88 for property to RM10.07 for home services. The reliable way to price your own campaign is to look up your keywords in Google’s Keyword Planner and work backwards from the number of leads you want.
If you hire an agency, its management fee is a separate bill on top of what you pay Google.
How does Google Ads billing work?
Google Ads is an auction. Each time someone searches, Google decides which ads to show and in what order based on bids, ad quality and expected impact. On Search campaigns you are charged when someone clicks your ad, not when it is shown. The price of that click is your cost per click (CPC).
You control spend with an average daily budget for each campaign. Google’s help pages set out three rules worth knowing before you start:
| Rule | What Google says |
|---|---|
| Daily spend | Spend on any one day can be up to two times your average daily budget |
| Monthly charging limit | You will not be charged more than 30.4 times your average daily budget in a month |
| Overdelivery | If ads run past the monthly limit, Google applies an overdelivery credit |
So a RM100 daily budget can spend RM200 on a busy day, but the month is capped at RM3,040 before tax. To turn a monthly budget into a daily one, divide by 30.4.
Google offers three payment settings. Automatic payments (postpay) charge your card after ads run, either when costs reach your payment threshold or on the first day of the month, whichever comes first. Manual payments (prepay) let you add funds in advance, and ads stop when the balance runs out, but this option is not available in every country. Monthly invoicing is a credit line for businesses that meet Google’s requirements.
Is there tax on Google Ads in Malaysia?
Yes. Google’s tax help page states that from 1 March 2024, Google Ads sales in Malaysia are subject to 8% sales and services tax (SST), up from 6%. It applies to all Google Ads accounts with a Malaysian business address. The contracting entity is Google Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd.
The tax sits on top of your click costs. RM3,000 of ad spend becomes RM3,240 once 8% SST is added. Build this into your budget from day one. Google says it cannot advise on tax matters, so ask your tax adviser how to treat the charge in your accounts.
How much does a click cost in Malaysia?
Google publishes no official Malaysian CPC benchmark, so we measured two things.
- Keyword Planner sample. We pulled Google Keyword Planner data for 80 commercial keywords, eight per industry, for searches in Malaysia in English from October 2025 to September 2026. Data came back for 75 of them. Google reports these figures in US dollars, which we converted at Bank Negara Malaysia’s middle rate of RM4.0835 on 16 October 2026.
- Our client accounts. The average CPC actually paid on Search campaigns in six Google Ads accounts O2O Digital manages, counting only clicks from Malaysia, from October 2024 to September 2026.
| Industry | Median CPC, Keyword Planner | Top-of-page bid range |
|---|---|---|
| Home services | RM10.07 | RM3.12 – RM11.27 |
| B2B and industrial | RM8.86 | RM2.08 – RM9.04 |
| Legal and professional services | RM6.68 | RM2.02 – RM8.27 |
| Healthcare and dental | RM5.92 | RM1.61 – RM6.64 |
| Insurance and finance | RM5.08 | RM1.31 – RM5.76 |
| Travel and tourism | RM3.59 | RM0.74 – RM4.06 |
| Automotive | RM3.39 | RM0.98 – RM4.66 |
| Education and tuition | RM3.14 | RM1.31 – RM4.17 |
| E-commerce and retail | RM2.41 | RM0.78 – RM4.61 |
| Property and real estate | RM1.88 | RM0.16 – RM3.10 |
The bid range is the median of Keyword Planner’s low and high top-of-page bids for each industry’s keywords.
Our clients paid less than these Keyword Planner medians:
| Client type | Accounts | Average CPC paid |
|---|---|---|
| E-commerce and retail | 2 | RM0.65 – RM1.15 |
| B2B and industrial | 2 | RM1.79 – RM3.03 |
| Lead generation (recruitment, travel) | 2 | RM2.29 – RM8.63 |
The median across the six accounts was RM2.04 a click. Real accounts pay less than Planner medians partly because they include cheaper long, specific searches and searches for the brand’s own name, which Planner samples like ours leave out.
An average hides a wide spread. In our B2B sample, “erp system malaysia” cost about RM66 a click, while “warehouse for rent selangor” cost RM2.45. Even within property, the range ran from RM0.86 to RM10.98. An industry average can be several times off for your own keywords, so check them yourself.
How do I estimate CPC for my own keywords?
Use Keyword Planner, which is free inside a Google Ads account.
- Open Tools, then Keyword Planner, then Discover new keywords.
- Enter the services you sell and set the location to Malaysia, or to the states you serve.
- Read the two bid columns. Top of page bid (low range) approximates the 20th percentile of what advertisers paid for a top-of-page position over the last 30 days. Top of page bid (high range) approximates the 80th percentile.
- Plan with a figure between the two. Use the high range for your most important keywords, since that is closer to what it takes to appear consistently.
Some keywords show no bid data because there is too little history. In that case, start with a small test budget and use your own account’s CPC after two to four weeks.
How much should I budget to start?
Start from the leads you want, not from a round number. The formula is:
Monthly ad spend = target leads × CPC ÷ conversion rate
Conversion rate is the share of clicks that become an enquiry, such as a form, call or WhatsApp message. If you have no data yet, use a cautious assumption and replace it with real figures after the first month.
Worked example
A renovation company wants 30 enquiries a month. Keyword Planner suggests about RM4 a click, and it assumes 5% of clicks will enquire.
| Step | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Clicks needed | 30 ÷ 5% | 600 |
| Monthly ad spend | 600 × RM4 | RM2,400 |
| 8% SST | RM2,400 × 8% | RM192 |
| Total paid to Google | RM2,400 + RM192 | RM2,592 |
| Average daily budget | RM2,400 ÷ 30.4 | about RM79 |
| Cost per lead (before tax) | RM4 ÷ 5% | RM80 |
Conversion rate changes the answer more than anything else. The same 30 leads at RM4 a click cost:
| Conversion rate | Clicks needed | Monthly ad spend |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5% | 1,200 | RM4,800 |
| 5% | 600 | RM2,400 |
| 10% | 300 | RM1,200 |
This is why landing pages matter as much as bids. Doubling your conversion rate halves the cost of every lead.
As a rule of thumb, set a minimum budget that buys roughly 300 to 500 clicks a month in your auction, so you have enough data to judge what works. At RM4 a click, that is RM1,200 to RM2,000 before tax.
What do agencies charge to manage Google Ads?
Management fees are separate from ad spend. There are three common models:
| Model | How it works | Published ranges |
|---|---|---|
| Flat retainer | A fixed monthly fee, whatever you spend | RM800 to RM5,000, up to RM8,000 for corporate accounts |
| Percentage of spend | A share of your monthly ad spend | 8% to 20% |
| Hybrid | A base fee plus a smaller percentage | Quoted case by case |
Percentage models usually come with a minimum fee of about RM1,500 to RM2,000, so a low percentage rarely means a low bill on a small budget. As spend grows, the maths flips. At 15%, a RM20,000 monthly budget carries a RM3,000 fee, which is where a flat retainer often becomes cheaper. Some agencies also charge a one-off setup fee for account build and conversion tracking.
These ranges come from Malaysian agencies’ own published pricing, not an independent survey.
Whichever model you choose, ask:
- Do you pay Google directly, or does the agency rebill your ad spend with a markup?
- Who owns the Google Ads account if you part ways?
- Is conversion tracking included in the setup?
- What is the minimum term and notice period?
What wastes Google Ads budget?
Most wasted spend comes from a handful of settings and habits:
- No conversion tracking. Without it, Google’s automated bidding has nothing to optimise for, and you cannot tell which keywords bring enquiries.
- Broad keywords without negatives. Review the search terms report regularly and add irrelevant searches, such as “free”, “jobs” or “course”, as negative keywords.
- Sending clicks to the homepage. A visitor searching for one service should land on a page about that service, with a clear way to enquire.
- Slow or confusing mobile pages. You pay for the click whether or not the page loads. A dedicated landing page built for one offer usually converts better than a general page.
- Loose location settings. Check that ads reach people in the areas you actually serve.
- Running ads when no one answers. If enquiries come by phone, use an ad schedule that matches your office hours.
- Judging too early. A week of data on a small budget is not enough to decide whether a keyword works.
How do I know if Google Ads is working?
Measure cost per lead and cost per sale, not clicks or impressions. Track every enquiry type: form submissions, calls from ads and your website, and WhatsApp clicks. If your sales happen offline, record which leads became customers so you can see which keywords bring buyers rather than just enquiries.
Then compare cost per lead with what a customer is worth. Say one in five leads becomes a customer worth RM2,000 in gross profit. Each lead is then worth up to RM400 to you before you lose money. A RM80 lead is comfortably inside that. A RM500 lead is not.
A useful monthly report shows spend including SST, conversions, cost per conversion, the search terms that triggered your ads, and what was changed that month.
Should I use Google Ads or SEO?
Google Ads brings traffic from the day it starts and stops when you stop paying. SEO builds slowly but keeps working without a per-click cost. Our comparison of SEO and Google Ads covers which to start with, and our guide to SEO prices in Malaysia shows what the organic side costs. Many businesses run both: ads for leads now, SEO for the long term.
How does O2O manage Google Ads?
O2O Digital is a Google Ads agency in Malaysia and a Google Partner, founded in 2008, with offices in Petaling Jaya and Penang. Our Google Ads and SEM service covers search, display and remarketing campaigns. Each account starts with an audit of your current setup and the keywords competitors bid on. We then set up conversion tracking, landing pages and ad copy before launch, and keep adjusting bids, negative keywords and ads once campaigns are live. Pricing depends on your campaigns and spend, so we quote after reviewing your goals.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum budget for Google Ads in Malaysia?
Google sets no minimum. In practice, budget for enough clicks to learn from, roughly 300 to 500 a month. Multiply that by your expected CPC from Keyword Planner.
Do I pay tax on Google Ads in Malaysia?
Yes. Google adds 8% SST to Google Ads charges for accounts with a Malaysian business address, effective 1 March 2024.
Can Google charge more than my daily budget?
On a single day, yes, up to two times your average daily budget. Over a month, Google will not charge more than 30.4 times your average daily budget.
Is it cheaper to pay an agency a percentage or a flat fee?
On small budgets, a flat fee or a percentage with a minimum often costs about the same. On large budgets, a percentage grows with spend, so a flat or capped fee is usually cheaper.
