Local SEO is the work that makes your business show up when people nearby search for what you sell, such as “dentist Subang Jaya” or “aircon service near me”. It covers your Google Business Profile, reviews, consistent contact details, location pages and local keywords. The goal is a place in Google Maps and in the local pack, the short list of businesses shown with a map in Google Search. This guide shows how to do it in Malaysia, step by step.

How does Google rank local results?

Google’s help page says local results are mainly based on three factors, and that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking:

  1. Relevance: how well your profile matches the search. Complete, detailed business information helps Google match you.
  2. Distance: how far you are from the searcher. If they do not share a location, Google uses what it knows about where they are.
  3. Prominence: how well-known you are, based partly on how many websites link to you and how many reviews you have. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help.

You cannot move your shop, so the work goes into relevance and prominence.

Where do I start with Google Business Profile?

The profile is what appears in the local pack and on Maps, so it comes first. Our Google Business Profile guide covers creating, claiming and verifying it, storefront versus service-area setup, and what to fill in. This post covers what comes after.

Two rules from Google shape everything below. Verified businesses are more likely to show up, and inaccurate details can stop your profile appearing for relevant searches. Your profile name must match your real-world name, with no added keywords or locations.

How do I choose the right categories?

Categories are one of the clearest relevance signals you control. Google’s guidelines say to:

  • Use as few categories as possible to describe your core business.
  • Choose the most specific category that still represents the main business.
  • Complete the sentence “This business IS a”, not “This business HAS a”.
  • Not use categories as keywords or to describe features.

A specific category already implies the general ones above it, so skip the broad options. Adding or editing a category may mean verifying again, so change categories deliberately.

How do I get more Google reviews without breaking the rules?

Reviews feed prominence. The safe way to get more is to ask every customer, using Google’s own review link. On a computer, open your Business Profile and select Read reviews, then Get more reviews to copy the link or save the QR code. Google notes the QR code can currently only be generated in a desktop browser.

Google suggests putting it on receipts, in thank-you emails, at the end of a chat and on a printed QR code in your store. In Malaysia the chat is usually WhatsApp, which Google also lists as a way to send requests.

Google prohibits:

  • Incentives. Free or discounted goods or services in exchange for posting, changing or removing a review count as fake engagement. A free drink or a voucher counts.
  • Reviews that are not genuine. Reviews must reflect a real experience.

Reply to reviews, including negative ones. Google advises short, polite, specific replies with no promotions, and says a mix of positive and negative feedback often feels more trustworthy. Flag reviews that break Google’s content policies instead of arguing in the reply.

What is NAP consistency and why does it matter?

NAP is your business name, address and phone number. Google says it can detect information about your business from your website and from mentions across the web. If those sources disagree with your profile, Google gets mixed signals about who and where you are. Pick one exact version and use it everywhere:

  • Name: the name on your signboard. Google requires real-world proof, such as signage or invoices, before legal terms like “Ltd” go in the name.
  • Address: one format, from unit and floor to jalan, postcode, city and state. A virtual office is not eligible. A co-working desk qualifies only with signage, staff and customers during business hours.
  • Phone: a number that reaches the location, written the same way each time.

Fix your website footer and contact page first, then the listings below.

Which citation sources matter in Malaysia?

A citation is any listing of your name, address and phone number on another site or app. Start with the map and navigation apps your customers use.

Source Where it shows How to manage it
Google Business Profile Google Search and Google Maps business.google.com
Waze Drivers navigating to you Add or edit your business in the Waze Map Editor
Apple Maps iPhone and Mac users searching in Maps Apple Business, at apple.com/business
Bing Places Bing search and Bing Maps bingplaces.com, now at bing.com/forbusiness
Facebook and Instagram Customers checking you before they visit Page contact details and address
Industry bodies Trade associations and chambers Ask them to use your exact NAP in member listings

Quality beats volume. Google’s spam policies define link spam as links created mainly to manipulate rankings, so mass directory submissions for links are a risk, not a shortcut.

How do I build location pages that are not thin?

A page for each real location can help relevance. The risk is near-identical pages for every suburb. Google’s spam policies list pages targeted at specific regions or cities that funnel users to one page, and substantially similar pages, as doorway abuse. Mass-producing low-value pages, including with AI, is scaled content abuse.

Done right Thin suburb page
One page per real office, branch or service area One page per suburb you have never worked in
Address, hours and phone for that location The same text with “Shah Alam” swapped for “Klang”
Projects, photos or customers from that area Stock photos and no local proof
Local details, such as parking and landmarks Keyword lists of nearby towns
Linked from your navigation or a locations hub Orphan pages that only exist for search

Our web design Penang page exists because we have an office in Bayan Baru. Our web design Selangor page covers the state our Petaling Jaya office serves. If you cannot write something specific about a place, you do not need a page for it.

Which local keywords should I target?

Local searches usually follow one of three patterns:

  1. Service plus place: “web design petaling jaya”, “lawyer johor bahru”.
  2. Near me: “dentist near me”. There is no place name, so Google relies on the searcher’s location. Writing “near me” on your pages does not help.
  3. Implicit local: a plain service typed on a phone. Google’s own example is “Italian restaurant” returning nearby places.

Use the place names customers use. In the Klang Valley that is often the township, such as “SS2”, “Damansara Utama” or “Bandar Sunway”, rather than the city. Put the service and place in the page title, H1 and opening paragraph, in natural sentences. Our SEO Petaling Jaya page is built around one service and one area.

Should I target Chinese and Malay searches?

Yes, if your customers search that way. Someone may type “kedai bunga petaling jaya” or “八打灵再也 网站设计” instead of the English phrase. Check the terms in your Business Profile Searches metric and in Search Console first. Google’s guidance for multilingual sites:

  • Use a separate URL for each language, not cookies or browser settings.
  • Add hreflang annotations so Google shows the right version.
  • Translate properly. Automated translation that adds little value is listed as scaled content abuse.

On the Business Profile itself, do not repeat your name in several scripts, even if your signboard does. Google’s guidelines do not allow repeated bilingual names. Let the description, services and website carry the other languages.

Do I need LocalBusiness schema?

It is worth adding. LocalBusiness structured data states your name, address, hours and contact details in a standard format Google can read. Google lists name and address as required and recommends telephone, url, geo, openingHoursSpecification and image, using the most specific subtype, such as Dentist or Restaurant. A minimal example:

{
	"@context": "https://schema.org",
	"@type": "Dentist",
	"name": "Example Dental Clinic",
	"address": {
		"@type": "PostalAddress",
		"streetAddress": "12, Jalan SS 2/24",
		"addressLocality": "Petaling Jaya",
		"addressRegion": "Selangor",
		"postalCode": "47300",
		"addressCountry": "MY"
	},
	"telephone": "+60312345678",
	"url": "https://www.example.com.my/"
}

Match every value to your Business Profile and footer. Google recommends aggregateRating only for sites that collect reviews about other businesses, so do not mark up your own stars. Check the page in Google’s Rich Results Test.

How do I track local SEO results?

Business Profile performance is available for verified profiles. It shows the searches people used to find you, updated at the start of each month, plus views, calls, directions and website clicks. Google notes the figures include Google Ads as well as organic results, so allow for any ad spend.

Search Console shows your website in Google Search. The Performance report gives clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position by query and page. Filter queries by place name to see how location pages do.

Record a baseline before you change anything and compare monthly. Because distance is a ranking factor, one search from your office does not show how you rank across your area.

What should I do in the first 30 days?

Week Task Done when
Week 1 Verify and complete your Business Profile No “Get verified” prompt, all fields filled
Week 1 Check categories against the “IS a” rule One specific primary category, few others
Week 1 Record Business Profile and Search Console baselines Figures saved in a spreadsheet
Week 2 Fix NAP on your website, then Waze, Apple Maps and Bing One exact name, address and phone everywhere
Week 2 Update Facebook, Instagram and association listings Same NAP and correct map pin
Week 3 Create your review link and QR code In receipts, emails and WhatsApp replies
Week 3 Reply to reviews and add LocalBusiness schema No unanswered reviews, schema test passes
Week 4 Improve, merge or remove thin location pages Each page has local details and proof
Week 4 Compare results with your baseline Next month’s priorities written down

After that, the routine is steady: ask every customer for a review, update hours for public holidays, add photos, and earn links from local partners, suppliers and press.

When should I hire help with local SEO?

You can do most of this yourself. Consider help when:

  • Your profile is suspended, duplicated or stuck in verification.
  • You run several branches and need pages, schema and listings kept in line.
  • Competitors with fewer reviews still outrank you, which points to relevance or website issues worth investigating.
  • You need content in English, Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese.
  • Nobody has time to ask for and reply to reviews every week.

Before signing, confirm you will own the Business Profile and accounts. Avoid anyone who promises first place in the local pack, since Google says local ranking cannot be bought. Frequently asked questions

How long does local SEO take to work?

Google does not publish a timeline. Profile and category fixes count once Google processes them. Reviews and links build over months, so measure progress monthly against your baseline.

Can I rank in Google Maps without a physical shop?

Yes, if you serve customers at their location, such as aircon servicing or home cleaning. Set up a service-area business and hide your address. A business that only operates online, or from a virtual office, is not eligible.

Do I need a website for local SEO?

Not for a Business Profile, but it helps. Google counts links to your business as part of prominence, and your website holds your location pages, schema and other-language content.

Can I pay Google to rank higher in the local pack?

No. Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Google Ads is a separate, paid product.
