To choose a Shopify agency in Malaysia, first check its profile in Shopify’s Partner Directory. That shows its tier, how long it has been a partner and reviews from paying merchants. Then test it on the local work Shopify does not do for you: a third-party payment gateway, courier labels, SST, LHDN e-invoicing and Shopee or Lazada sync. Below is a shortlist of 8 firms that serve Malaysian brands, each with what it is best for, plus a checklist and typical costs.

Disclosure: O2O Digital wrote this guide. We build Shopify stores through our WebCEO brand and sell a Shopify e-invoice app, so we are one of the firms listed. Competitor facts come from their own websites and Shopify’s Partner Directory, checked in October 2026.

What does a Shopify agency do that a freelancer or DIY does not?

Shopify itself handles hosting, security and updates. What you hire for is the design, setup, integrations and support around it.

DIY Freelancer Agency
Who does the work You, with a theme and apps One developer or designer A team: design, development, often marketing
Best for A small catalogue and a free theme Theme tweaks, fixes, small builds Custom design, migrations, integrations, larger stores
Main risk Your time, and gaps in setup One person is a single point of failure Higher cost, and juniors may do the work
Support Shopify help and app developers Depends on availability Usually a support or maintenance plan

If you only need a theme set up and products loaded, a freelancer or DIY is often enough. An agency makes more sense when the store has to connect to POS, an ERP, couriers or marketplaces, or when you are moving from another platform.

What do Shopify partner tiers mean?

Shopify sorts service partners in its directory into four tiers. Its own definitions are:

Tier Shopify says it is
Select Best for small and medium-sized businesses
Plus Best suited for mid-market and larger businesses
Premier Designed for large enterprises
Platinum Tailored for global enterprise businesses

Tiers measure commercial track record. To reach Plus tier or above, Shopify requires at least US$500,000 a year in revenue to Shopify from merchants the partner acquired in the last 5 years, or US$2.5 million from merchants it actively works with. It also needs 2 Shopify Plus or enterprise stores, or 40 standard stores, plus at least 10 Shopify Verified Skills held by 3 or more staff.

When people say “Shopify Plus Partner” today, they usually mean the Plus tier or above. Shopify has merged its old Plus partner directory into the main Partner Directory. Plus, Premier and Platinum partners are invited to list there, and a limited number of lower-tier partners are also listed. Some profiles, such as Shopjedi and Tameta Tech below, show “Service partner” without a tier.

A tier is not a quality score. A Premier agency built for enterprise retailers may be the wrong fit for a 50-product SME, and a small listed partner may suit you better.

How do you check an agency in the Shopify Partner Directory?

  1. Open the Shopify Partner Directory and filter by location, tier, services, languages and industry.
  2. Ask the agency for its profile link and check the company name matches its quote and invoice.
  3. On the profile, read the tier, “Partner since” date, primary location and supported countries.
  4. Read the reviews. Shopify only shows reviews from merchants on a paid plan, and a partner can only request one after working in that merchant’s store.
  5. Check the listed services and price range against what you need.
  6. Ask for two stores they built in your category and contact those brands.

If an agency says it is a Shopify Partner but has no directory profile, ask why. It may be a registered partner without a listing, which is common, but you should know which it is.

Which Shopify agencies serve Malaysia?

Sweetmag Solutions lists custom apps and integrations, systems integration, and store configuration. It supports Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia.

Web Tonic (webtonic.io) is a digital marketing firm with an office in Ilham Tower, Kuala Lumpur. Its core services are SEO, Google Ads, paid social and web design, and it builds Shopify, WooCommerce, WordPress and Webflow sites. Its Kuala Lumpur page does not claim Shopify Partner status.

O2O Digital builds Shopify stores through WebCEO (webceo.my), our Shopify brand, run by O2O Ecommerce Sdn Bhd. WebCEO covers store setup, custom design, replatforming, Shopify POS, and support and maintenance. We also publish the Shopify e-invoice app for LHDN MyInvois on the Shopify App Store, at US$24 a month. WebCEO is listed in Shopify’s Partner Directory as a Select tier service partner, based in Petaling Jaya, with partner status since March 2019. For brands that would rather not run on Shopify, we also offer our own e-commerce platform.

What Malaysia-specific work should a Shopify agency handle?

Most Shopify setup advice is written for markets where Shopify Payments exists. In Malaysia, ask every agency how it handles these:

Area What to ask the agency
Payments in MYR Which gateway do you recommend, and why? Shopify Payments is not available here, so Shopify adds a 0.6% to 2% fee on top.
Couriers Which couriers will print labels and sync tracking from Shopify, and through which app?
SST If we are SST-registered, how will tax settings, checkout and invoices show SST correctly?
LHDN e-invoicing How will customers request an e-invoice, and how will the month-end consolidated e-invoice be submitted?
Language How will Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese versions of product pages and checkout be translated and maintained?
Shopee and Lazada How will stock and orders sync with Shopee and Lazada?

Payments. Billplz, senangPay, HitPay and Razorpay Curlec all list Shopify integrations, with different fees and payout times. See our payment gateway comparison before you agree to the agency’s choice.

E-invoicing. Businesses with annual sales below RM3 million are generally exempt from LHDN e-invoicing since 1 September 2026. Above that, the store needs an app that collects buyer details and submits to MyInvois. Our e-invoicing checklist for online stores lists what to have in place, and our Shopify e-invoice app covers checkout self-requests and Shopify POS.

Marketplaces. Shopify’s own Marketplace Connect app works with Amazon, eBay, Target Plus and Walmart, not Shopee or Lazada. Syncing those two needs a third-party app or an order management system, so ask the agency to name the one it will use and who pays for it.

How much does a Shopify agency cost in Malaysia?

Few Malaysian agencies publish prices, so treat any figure as a starting point. Our e-commerce website cost guide puts a starter, theme-based store on Shopify or WooCommerce at RM2,500 to RM6,000, a professional SME store with custom design and integrations at RM8,000 to RM20,000, and a custom platform at RM30,000 to RM50,000 or more.

Directory listings give some public reference points. Shopjedi shows US$100 to US$8,000 for its selected services. Tameta Tech starts store builds at US$500 and migrations at US$1,500. Most listed Premier and Plus partners show “Contact for pricing”.

The build is only part of the bill. Shopify plans cost US$19 to US$299 a month on yearly billing, plus the third-party transaction fee, gateway fees and apps. Our Shopify pricing guide works these out in ringgit. Ask each agency for a written quote that separates:

  1. The one-off build: design, setup, data migration and integrations.
  2. Paid themes and apps, with their monthly cost in USD.
  3. Monthly support or maintenance, and what it covers.
  4. Who owns the store account, theme files and app subscriptions.

The last point matters most. The Shopify store should be in your name, with the agency added as a collaborator, so you can change agencies without rebuilding.

Should you use Shopify at all?

Check the platform before you choose the agency. If most of your sales come through social media and live selling, compare Shopify vs Shopline. If you want the store and blog on WordPress, or a self-hosted store, see Shopify vs WooCommerce vs OpenCart. If you sell in-store and online and want promotions, loyalty and shipping labels in one system, see how we build stores for e-commerce brands.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Shopify Plus partner?

Usually not. Shopify describes the Plus tier as best suited for mid-market and larger businesses. Most Malaysian SMEs on Basic or Grow plans are well served by a smaller listed partner or a capable freelancer.

Is a “Shopify expert” the same as a Shopify Partner?

No. “Shopify expert” is a marketing phrase anyone can use. A Shopify Partner is in Shopify’s Partner Program, and a listed partner has a public profile in the Partner Directory that you can check.

How much does a Shopify developer cost in Malaysia?

A starter, theme-based store typically costs RM2,500 to RM6,000, and a professional SME store RM8,000 to RM20,000. Shopify’s monthly plan, apps and transaction fees come on top.

Can a Shopify agency set up LHDN e-invoicing?

Yes, if it installs and configures an e-invoice app connected to your MyInvois account. You still need to generate your own ERP Client ID and Client Secret in the MyInvois Portal.
