Shopify Malaysia: How to Set Up and Sell Online (2026)
How to set up Shopify in Malaysia: ringgit pricing, local payment gateways, courier apps, SST, e-invoicing and the 2024 online selling rules, step by step.
Yes, you can run a Shopify store from Malaysia. Sign up at shopify.com/my, set your store currency to ringgit, connect a local payment gateway such as Billplz or senangPay (Shopify Payments is not offered in Malaysia), add a courier app such as EasyParcel or J&T Express, and point your own .com.my domain at the store. Plans start at US$19 a month billed yearly, and Shopify adds a 0.6% to 2% fee on each sale paid through a third-party gateway.
Can you use Shopify in Malaysia?
Yes. Malaysian businesses can sign up for any Shopify plan and sell to customers in Malaysia and abroad. Three things work differently from countries such as Singapore or Australia:
- No Shopify Payments. Malaysia is not on Shopify’s list of Shopify Payments countries, so you connect a third-party gateway and pay Shopify’s third-party transaction fee on each sale.
- Billing in US dollars. Shopify bills Malaysian stores in USD for the plan, apps and themes, and adds SST to its own bill.
- No card readers. Shopify POS software runs in Malaysia, but Shopify’s supported card readers in Asia-Pacific cover only Australia, New Zealand and Singapore.
The Shopify admin can be switched to Bahasa Melayu under your account’s language settings.
What is the difference between Shopify and Shopee?
Shopee is a marketplace: customers shop across thousands of sellers on Shopee’s own app, and Shopee owns the customer relationship. Shopify is software for running your own store on your own domain. You bring the traffic, and you keep the customer data, the brand and the repeat sales.
Many Malaysian brands do both. They list on Shopee, Lazada or TikTok Shop for reach and run a Shopify store for direct sales, with an app keeping stock in sync (see selling on Shopee and Lazada from Shopify).
How to set up a Shopify store in Malaysia
- Sign up and pick a plan. Start the free trial at shopify.com/my. Basic suits a new store. Grow pays for itself once online sales pass about RM12,270 a month, because it halves the transaction fee. Our Shopify pricing guide has every plan in RM.
- Set the store currency to ringgit. Go to Settings > General > Store defaults > Change store currency. With a third-party gateway, the currency must be one your gateway supports, and Malaysian gateways settle in MYR.
- Connect a payment gateway. Install your gateway’s Shopify app, then add it under Settings > Payments. Add bank transfer or cash on delivery as manual methods if you accept them.
- Set up shipping. Create shipping zones for Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia, since rates to Sabah and Sarawak are higher, and install a courier app to book pickups and print labels.
- Check tax settings. Most online retailers do not charge SST on goods. See the SST section before you switch on tax collection.
- Connect your domain. Register your .com.my or .my domain with a MYNIC-accredited registrar if Shopify does not sell that extension, then connect it under Settings > Domains. Our .com.my vs .my vs .com guide covers who can register which.
- Add the information Malaysian law requires. Business details, prices, delivery times, return terms and a privacy notice, in Bahasa Melayu (see what the law requires).
- Plan e-invoicing. If your annual sales are RM3 million or more, add an app that issues LHDN e-invoices from your orders.
- Test, then launch. Place a test order with each payment and shipping method, check the confirmation email, then remove the store password.
Which payment gateways work with Shopify in Malaysia?
Billplz, senangPay, HitPay and Razorpay Curlec all list Shopify integrations and take FPX, cards and e-wallets. Because Shopify Payments is not available, each sale through them carries Shopify’s third-party fee (2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced) on top of the gateway’s own fees. Manual methods such as bank transfer and cash on delivery carry no Shopify fee.
The Shopify pricing guide works through the combined cost per order, and our payment gateway comparison compares fees and payout times for each provider.
How do you ship Shopify orders in Malaysia?
Malaysian couriers and aggregators with their own app on the Shopify App Store, checked October 2026:
| App | What it is |
|---|---|
| EasyParcel | Aggregator: compare and book 60+ couriers, MY and SG |
| Delyva | Aggregator from Petaling Jaya |
| ParcelDaily | Aggregator from Petaling Jaya |
| MyParcel Asia | Aggregator for booking and labels |
| J&T Express Malaysia | Courier’s own app |
| Ninja Van | Courier’s own app, Malaysia and the Philippines |
| Pos Malaysia | Pos Malaysia Berhad’s own app |
An aggregator suits most new stores: one account, several couriers, and you pick the cheapest or fastest per order. A courier’s own app makes sense once your volume earns you a contract rate.
Can you sell on Shopee and Lazada from Shopify?
Not with Shopify’s own tool. Shopify Marketplace Connect covers Amazon, eBay, Target Plus and Walmart, not Shopee or Lazada. Third-party apps on the Shopify App Store fill the gap, including BigSeller, OMNA’s Shopee and Lazada Sync, OneCart, EMMA, and Easy Shopee, Lazada & TikTok. Before you pick one, check that it syncs stock both ways, so an item sold on Shopee is taken off your Shopify count straight away.
If you also sell in a physical shop, see selling in-store and online without stock mismatches.
Do you charge SST on a Shopify store?
Usually not, if you sell goods you did not make. In Malaysia, sales tax is charged by manufacturers of taxable goods and on imports. A manufacturer must register once its taxable sales pass RM500,000 in 12 months. A retailer reselling finished goods does not register for or charge sales tax.
Service tax covers listed services. The July 2025 expansion added services such as rental and leasing, beauty treatments, private healthcare and private education, each with its own registration threshold. Selling goods online is not on that list.
If you are registered, set tax up under Settings > Taxes and duties in Shopify and choose Malaysia. Shopify also charges SST on its own bills to Malaysian stores, which is separate from what you charge your customers. Your tax agent should confirm your position, especially if you make or import what you sell.
What must a Malaysian online store show?
The Consumer Protection (Electronic Trade Transactions) Regulations 2024 took effect on 25 December 2024 and replaced the 2012 regulations. An online seller must show:
- the business or company name, place of business, email and phone number
- the website address
- the main features of each product
- the full price, including delivery, tax and other charges
- payment methods and terms of sale
- the estimated delivery time
- safety or health certification, where the product needs it
The information must be in Bahasa Melayu, and you may add other languages. Buyers must be able to correct mistakes in an order, you must acknowledge each order without undue delay, and you pay the return postage when goods are defective or materially different from the listing.
Personal data is covered by the Personal Data Protection Act 2010, which requires a privacy notice telling customers what you collect and why. The 2024 amendments, in force in stages during 2025, added data breach notification and a duty to appoint a data protection officer.
Do you need e-invoicing on Shopify?
Shopify does not submit e-invoices to LHDN by itself. Since 1 September 2026, businesses with annual sales below RM3 million are generally exempt. Above that, an app on the Shopify App Store can submit an e-invoice for each order, or a consolidated e-invoice for buyers who do not ask for one. Our Shopify e-invoice app does this, and the e-invoice checklist for online stores lists what to set up.
How much does Shopify cost in Malaysia?
Shopify’s plans are US$19 (Basic), US$49 (Grow) and US$299 (Advanced) a month billed yearly, or US$25, US$65 and US$399 billed monthly. Plus starts at US$2,300 a month. New stores get a 3-day free trial, then US$1 a month for the first 3 months on most plans. On a small store, transaction and gateway fees usually cost more than the plan. The full breakdown in ringgit includes a first-year example.
Is Shopify the right platform for you?
Shopify is the fastest way to launch if you want a hosted store with a large app library. It is weaker on two Malaysian points: the third-party fee on every gateway sale, and the lack of native Shopee and Lazada sync. Compare it with Shopline, which has its own payments in Malaysia, and with WooCommerce and OpenCart, which charge no platform fee but need hosting and upkeep.
If you want help, our guide to choosing a Shopify agency in Malaysia lists what to check. O2O Digital builds and runs ecommerce websites for Malaysian brands, on Shopify or on our own platform, with gateways, couriers and e-invoicing connected.
